Former Nigeria defender Leon Balogun joins Hungarian champions Győri ETO

Former Nigeria international Leon Balogun has continued his European football journey after joining Hungarian champions Győri ETO FC on a free transfer.

The 38-year-old defender has signed a one-year contract with the Hungarian club after leaving Cypriot side Aris Limassol, where he spent last season and made 22 appearances across competitions.

Balogun, who brings extensive experience from some of Europe’s top leagues, expressed his excitement about joining Győri ETO FC and becoming part of what he believes is an ambitious project.

“I am very happy to be a player of ETO FC, as this is an extremely exciting project,” Balogun told the club’s official website.

The veteran centre-back also acknowledged the team’s strong start and stressed the importance of maintaining the standards that helped them enjoy success last season.

“I think the team has already shown what it is capable of in the first few matches, but now it is important to define and maintain the appropriate standard so that we can continue to build on the successes of last season.”

Balogun brings wealth of experience

Balogun arrives at Győri ETO FC following a productive campaign in Cyprus, where he scored twice and registered one assist in his 22 appearances for Aris Limassol.

His experience is expected to strengthen the Hungarian champions’ defensive options as they seek to build on last season’s achievements.

The former Super Eagles centre-back has spent much of his career playing at a high level across Europe, with his journey beginning in Germany before earning a move to England.

He played in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion before establishing himself as an experienced defender in Scotland with Rangers.

Balogun enjoyed two spells at Rangers and played an important role during his time at Ibrox, helping the club win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

His return to Hungary represents another chapter in a career that has taken him across several European leagues.

Balogun is expected to use his leadership and experience to make an immediate impact at Győri ETO FC, both on and off the pitch.

The defender, who has also represented Nigeria at major international tournaments, believes he can contribute beyond his performances on matchday.
