‘Real Madrid will be exciting’ – Former coach backs Yan Diomande to transform Los Blancos attack

Former DME Academy coach Todd Eason believes Yan Diomande has the qualities to transform Real Madrid’s attack, insisting the teenage winger’s arrival will make life easier for some of the club’s biggest stars.

Eason expects the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international to command defenders’ attention with his explosive pace and direct style, creating opportunities for teammates including Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

“I think Diomande is going to bring a lot of attention, and that might open up space for more opportunities for other players to exploit.”

The academy coach believes Diomande’s physical attributes will force opponents to adjust their defensive shape.

“Because Dio is so dynamic, powerful, and quick, it’s going to shift defenders to either stay a little bit closer, which will create gaps more centrally that Bellingham can go through.”

With Rodrygo recovering from an ACL injury, Diomande is expected to compete for a starting role following his reported €125 million move from RB Leipzig.

Eason is convinced the winger’s arrival could elevate Madrid’s frontline even further.

“When you’re dealing with Vinicius, Mbappe and Diomande, probably the three fastest players in LaLiga, it’s going to create a lot of space for other players to have more freedom to play.”

“It’s definitely going to be fun to watch going forward: Real Madrid’s going to be exciting.”

From poverty to one of football’s biggest transfers

Diomande’s rise to European football’s elite has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Growing up in the Sicogi district of Ivory Coast, football represented more than a dream. It was a pathway out of poverty.

The winger has spoken of enduring severe hardship as a child, at times stealing potatoes to survive and sharing cramped living conditions with dozens of others. After his father left for France, Diomande accepted the responsibility of helping support his family.

His journey gathered momentum in 2016 when he moved to Aboisso to join Academie Inter Foot Sud Comoe, where he finally traded playing barefoot and in plastic sandals for proper football boots.

Six years later, he made another life-changing decision by moving alone to the United States to study and develop at DME Academy in Florida despite speaking almost no English.

Football became his universal language

Although language initially presented a challenge, Eason said Diomande adapted remarkably quickly because of his intelligence and understanding of the game.

“The one thing that really stood out in Diomande was his intelligence of the game.”

“He was very quick to understand what we were trying to do without us speaking the same language, and it just kind of took off from there.”

The coach explained that Diomande naturally became a leader among the French-speaking players despite his young age.

His performances soon confirmed that he belonged in professional football rather than the American college system.

Diomande starred for DME Academy, Yulee High School and affiliate side AS Frenzi, helping the latter win the 2023 UPSL National Championship while finishing as both Playoffs Golden Boot winner and MVP.

Rejected before becoming a Bundesliga sensation

The road to the top, however, was far from smooth.

Trials with Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Rangers and Olympiacos all failed to produce a contract, while several Major League Soccer clubs also passed on the teenager.

After returning to Ivory Coast when his student visa expired, Diomande finally secured a move to Leganes in late 2024.

His rise thereafter was astonishing.

After beginning with the Spanish club’s reserve side, he made his senior debut against Real Madrid in March 2025 before earning a €20 million transfer to RB Leipzig only months later.

Despite suffering the heartbreaking loss of his 15-year-old sister Roxanne, Diomande flourished in Germany, scoring 12 Bundesliga goals and providing three assists in 33 appearances to win the league’s Rookie of the Year award.

He also impressed for Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations before starring at the FIFA World Cup, further enhancing his growing reputation.

Now preparing for UEFA Champions League football with Real Madrid, Diomande arrives as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
