Liverpool monitor £35m Djed Spence move as Tottenham weigh summer sale

Liverpool are interested in signing Tottenham defender Djed Spence after his impressive performances for England at the most recent World Cup, but face competition from clubs in both the Premier League and Italy.

According to The Sun, Liverpool have identified the 25-year-old as a potential target as they consider adding to their defensive options. However, their interest is not understood to be the strongest at this stage, with several other clubs believed to be pursuing the versatile full-back.

Spence was regarded as one of England’s standout players during the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He made a significant impact during the knockout stages, producing influential performances against Mexico, Norway and Argentina.

The defender’s ability to operate on either side of the back four is understood to be one of the qualities attracting interest from potential suitors. Despite his contribution for England, though, Spence currently sits behind Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson in the pecking order at Tottenham.

Tottenham are believed to be open to selling Spence during the summer transfer window. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is continuing to reshape the squad after the club finished 17th in the Premier League in each of the past two seasons.

A fee of about £35m is thought to be enough to secure Spence’s services, a figure that could make the player an attainable target for a number of clubs. Liverpool value the former Middlesbrough player, but their interest is currently understood to be less advanced than that of some rivals.

Inter Milan have already held discussions about a possible deal for Spence earlier this summer. Their city rivals AC Milan are also believed to be interested, creating the prospect of a battle between the two Serie A clubs for his signature.

Interest has also emerged from other Premier League sides, although no further clubs have been named. Liverpool will therefore have to decide whether to intensify their pursuit of Spence or allow their domestic and Italian rivals to take the lead in negotiations.

Spence’s situation at Tottenham has been shaped by his limited position in the club’s current defensive hierarchy, despite his strong international tournament. With the north London club prepared to consider a sale and a valuation of around £35m attached to the player, his future is expected to attract further attention during the summer.
