Sekgota closing in on Petrojet move after career rehabilitation

Kgaogelo Sekgota is close to joining Egyptian top-flight club Petrojet, as the former Kaizer Chiefs winger looks to revive his career after a difficult period away from football.

The 29-year-old has emerged as a target for the North African side following his rehabilitation programme and a short spell with Siwelele during the second half of the 2025/26 season.

Sekgota returned to Premier Soccer League football in January, making an immediate impact by scoring on his debut in Siwelele’s 1-1 draw with Richards Bay FC. His comeback followed a rehabilitation programme for alcohol abuse.

He went on to feature eight times for Siwelele, although most of those appearances came as a substitute while he continued working towards full match fitness.

At the time, Siwelele head coach Lehlohonolo Seema indicated that Sekgota was expected to remain part of his plans for the following campaign.

“We are happy that we will have Kgaogelo from the start of the season. We will have him in pre-season because most of the players we got here lacked that pre-season time. There is nothing wrong with him. It’s just that at the moment, there are guys that are doing better. You can see that they are supporting each other, and you can see the young ones injecting a lot of energy. With him, he is a talented player. I can tell you that he is going to be one of the important members of the team next season,” Seema told Soccer Laduma in May.

Those expectations were overturned when Siwelele announced a major squad restructure in July. A total of 23 players left the club, with Sekgota among those released. Happy Mashiane, Samkelo Zwane, Lyle Lakay, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Samir Nurkovic were also included in the departures.

Sekgota’s rehabilitation was documented by Watson Luandi, the chief executive of Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre in Limpopo. Luandi credited the NKRL foundation with identifying footballers who needed support and explained the centre’s role in helping them recover their personal and professional lives.

“Firstly, let me give acknowledgment to NKRL foundation that does the work of recognising the soccer players who are in need of help. Our passion is to help these guys so that they can regain their dignity on and off the field. While on that, let me stress this point, Kgaogelo was not using drugs. He is only using Marijuana which is easy to rehabilitate,” Luandi revealed.

He also said Sekgota had attracted overseas interest while undergoing rehabilitation, although he did not identify the interested club at the time.

“There is a team that he is contracted to presently, so I think they are the best to answer that question, but we believe that there is a club in Morocco that has previously shown interest in the player and that’s why the family wants him to get his life back as he is still young,” he stated.

A move to Petrojet would give Sekgota the chance to continue rebuilding his career outside the intense scrutiny that accompanied his time in South African football.
