Kaizer Chiefs step up pursuit of Stellenbosch winger Faiz Abrahams

Kaizer Chiefs have increased their interest in Stellenbosch FC winger Faiz Abrahams and are understood to be working on a possible loan deal for the 21-year-old.

Chiefs have already opened discussions with Stellenbosch FC over the player, with an agreement between the two clubs not expected to present a major obstacle. However, Abrahams would still need to settle personal terms with Amakhosi before a move could be completed.

The winger is the latest player from the Betway Premiership to attract attention from Chiefs during the current transfer window. A season-long loan is believed to be the most likely option as the club considers how best to add Abrahams to their squad.

Abrahams, known to his peers as ‘Fire’, developed at the Cape Town Spurs academy. His most notable achievement there came in 2024, when he was named Player of the Tournament at the U19 Bayhill Premier Cup.

He joined Stellenbosch FC in August 2024 but found it difficult to establish himself as a regular in the starting line-up. Following his first season with the club, he moved to Israeli side Hapoel Kfar Saba on loan.

The spell in Israel initially proved productive. Abrahams scored three goals and registered three assists in 11 appearances, performances which led to interest from Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

However, he was persuaded by an agent not to return to Hapoel Kfar Saba, after being promised that he would be taken to a stronger league. Abrahams subsequently came back to South Africa midway through his loan spell.

His return was followed by an absence from the club without permission. Stellenbosch FC were then required to pay a fee to terminate the loan agreement, avoiding the risk of the player receiving a ban for breaching his contract.

Since returning to South Africa, Abrahams has played only 26 minutes for Stellenbosch FC. Despite his limited involvement, he has continued to draw interest from clubs in the Betway Premiership.

Orlando Pirates were among the sides to pursue him in the current transfer window. The Buccaneers wanted to sign Abrahams on a permanent basis, but they were unable to reach an agreement with Stellenbosch FC.

Durban City also came close to securing the winger on a season-long loan. That proposed move ultimately broke down after Abrahams could not agree personal terms with the club.

Chiefs have now emerged as the latest club to make an approach. The Soweto club are weighing up whether to proceed with a temporary move, while negotiations with Abrahams over his personal conditions remain outstanding.

A deal between Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC is understood not to be a stumbling block, leaving the player’s agreement with Amakhosi as the key issue still to be resolved.
