Nayef Aguerd could return to Spain as Real Sociedad open talks

Real Sociedad have stepped up their efforts to re-sign Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd, with reports in France suggesting the Spanish club has opened talks with Olympique de Marseille over a potential deal.

According to FootMercato, the Basque club are keen to bring the 30-year-old back to San Sebastián after his loan spell last season, having already secured the player’s initial approval for a return.

Aguerd spent the 2024-25 campaign with Real Sociedad before returning to Marseille, where he remains under contract until 2030.

Sociedad push for defender’s return

The Spanish club’s interest comes after Aguerd established himself as a key figure in Real Sociedad’s defence during his time in La Liga.

FootMercato reports that negotiations between the two clubs are under way as Marseille look to reshape their squad and reduce their wage bill during the current transfer window.

The Moroccan centre-back joined the French side from West Ham United last year in a deal worth €23 million, but his future has become the subject of growing speculation.

Competition for Atlas Lion

Real Sociedad are not the only club monitoring Aguerd’s situation.

Previous reports linked the defender with a move to Qatari side Al Sadd, who were said to be close to agreeing a loan deal with Marseille that included an obligation to buy.

However, no official agreement has been announced, leaving the Morocco international’s next destination uncertain.

Back in training after injury setback

Aguerd recently returned to full training after recovering from the groin injury that ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His return to fitness has boosted his chances of playing a prominent role at club level ahead of the new season, whether in France, Spain or elsewhere.

Neither Marseille nor Real Sociedad has publicly commented on the reports linking the defender with a transfer.
