AmaZulu’s selection headache excites Arthur Zwane ahead of MTN8 test

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane admits he is still trying to discover the full potential of his squad this season, but believes the fierce competition for places has created the kind of selection headache every coach wants.

Usuthu return to MTN8 action on Sunday when they host Sekhukhune United in a quarter-final clash at Chatsworth Stadium, with Zwane encouraged by the depth available to him after a promising start to the campaign.

Speaking during AmaZulu’s media open day at Kings Park Stadium on Wednesday, Zwane admitted there is still uncertainty over his team’s ceiling, insisting competitive matches will provide the clearest picture of where they stand.

“Realistically, I’d be lying if I said I know where we are,” Zwane said. “The more we play, the better for us. Pre-season can tell you lies.”

AmaZulu began their Betway Premiership season with a victory over Stellenbosch and now face a challenging period that includes the MTN8 encounter against Sekhukhune, a midweek battle with Orlando Pirates and another league fixture the following weekend.

A new level of squad depth

While Zwane remains cautious about making predictions, one area where he has seen clear improvement is squad competition.

The AmaZulu boss believes the club’s recruitment has given him significantly more options compared to last season, when injuries often left him with limited choices.

“I’ve got a headache – a healthy headache,” Zwane said. “When I looked at our bench after the first game, I said these are genuine game changers. Any one of them deserves to start.”

The coach expects the busy schedule ahead to test every member of his squad, with rotation likely to become necessary as AmaZulu compete across multiple fronts.

“We’re playing on Sunday, then again on Wednesday and again next weekend. Everyone will get an opportunity because these matches take a lot out of the players.”

Building a squad that fits the vision

Zwane also explained that AmaZulu’s transfer strategy has been focused on finding players who match the club’s football philosophy rather than signing individuals based purely on reputation.

“We don’t go into the market just because players are doing well in their respective teams. We look for players who suit our style of play.”

That approach has helped Usuthu assemble a squad Zwane believes is better equipped to handle the demands of a long season.

After exiting the MTN8 at the quarter-final stage last year following defeat to Stellenbosch, AmaZulu are determined to make a deeper run this time around.

Zwane believes the experience gained from the previous campaign, combined with the confidence built through recent results, has placed his young squad in a stronger position.

“We won more games last season and now we believe in ourselves even more,” he said. “We want to go to the next round. We’ll give it our best shot and hopefully we’ll be there.”
