Ghana defender Abdul Mumin weighs next move after Rayo Vallecano exit

Abdul Mumin is in advanced discussions with a Portuguese club as he looks to secure his next move after leaving Rayo Vallecano.

The 28-year-old Ghanaian centre-back is currently without a club and could soon return to football, several weeks after a proposed transfer to Getafe failed to materialise. A move to Portugal has now emerged as the most serious option for the defender, according to Footy-Africa.

Getafe had made an approach for Mumin at the beginning of the summer transfer window and initially hoped to complete a deal for the Ghana international. However, negotiations eventually broke down after the two parties were unable to reach an agreement over the terms of a contract.

That setback has not left Mumin short of interest. The Portuguese club has moved ahead of the other teams monitoring his situation, but the defender continues to attract attention from a number of potential suitors.

Girona and Osasuna are still following developments, while clubs from Ligue 1, England and Major League Soccer are also understood to be keeping watch. Mumin is therefore expected to have several options as he considers where to continue his career.

The centre-back decided to leave Rayo Vallecano after rejecting a contract extension offer that he considered insufficient. His departure brought an end to his spell with the Spanish club and opened the possibility of a move elsewhere during the current transfer window.

Mumin had only recently returned to competitive football after recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. He made his comeback towards the end of last season and went on to feature in three La Liga matches.

Despite his limited playing time following that injury, Mumin was included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. He did not make an appearance during the tournament, but his selection underlined his continued involvement at international level.

The defender’s market value is estimated at €3m by Transfermarkt. With talks in Portugal now at an advanced stage and interest also coming from Spain, France, England and the United States, Mumin is expected to make a decision on his next destination soon.

His immediate priority will be to secure an agreement that allows him to rebuild his momentum after his injury and the end of his time at Rayo Vallecano. For now, the Portuguese proposal appears to be the clearest route back into club football, although the continuing interest from other sides means the final outcome remains open.
