Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen leaves Sevilla match in tears after injury

Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen was forced off in the 58th minute of their match against Sevilla after suffering an injury in a collision with Sevilla forward Rubi Or.

The Denmark international called for medical attention immediately after the challenge at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Barcelona’s medical staff assessed him before it was decided that he could not continue, prompting his substitution.

Christensen appeared deeply upset as he left the pitch. He later took his place on the substitutes’ bench, where he was visibly frustrated and saddened by the incident.

The defender is expected to undergo medical tests in the coming hours to establish the nature and seriousness of the injury. Barcelona have not yet announced a diagnosis.

The latest setback comes at a difficult time for Christensen, who has already endured lengthy periods on the sidelines in recent seasons. During the 2025-2026 season, Christensen missed 32 matches for Barcelona and Denmark because of a ruptured cruciate ligament. He was also absent for three further games because of calf problems.

He spent further time out during the 2024-2025 season after suffering an Achilles tendon injury and a muscular problem. Those absences have limited his playing continuity and made his latest injury particularly concerning for Barcelona.

Christensen had established an important role in the team this season before the match against Sevilla. He had featured in seven of Barcelona’s eight games, including six in La Liga and one in the Champions League.

He had started four of those matches and had been producing good performances before being forced off at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Barcelona supporters now face a wait for the results of the defender’s examinations and a clearer assessment of how long he could be unavailable. The club’s concern has been heightened by Christensen’s recent history of injuries, which has already interrupted his participation on several occasions.
