Barcelona’s Azzedine Ounahi interest faces new challenge from Real Betis

Azzedine Ounahi is emerging as one of the leading stories of the transfer window, with Real Betis preparing a serious attempt to sign the Morocco midfielder.

Ounahi is expected to leave Girona following the club’s relegation, and a number of Spanish sides are monitoring his situation. Barcelona are among those interested, but they would not have a clear run at the 24-year-old if they decide to make a formal move.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona have been considering options in midfield after Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury that is expected to keep him out for between three and four months. Ounahi is viewed as one possible solution, having impressed during the World Cup and produced a strong season with Girona.

However, his experience in La Liga and his ability to operate in more than one midfield role have attracted attention elsewhere in Spain. Clubs interested in him are reportedly prepared to explore a deal despite his expected price approaching €25m.

Transfer specialist Ekrem Konur says Real Betis are ready to make a serious move for Ounahi. Officials at the Benito Villamarin believe he would suit a side seeking greater creativity in the attacking third, while also offering options during the build-up and in positions closer to the opposition penalty area.

Barcelona’s interest is therefore being tested by competition from within Spain, with Real Betis now presenting a potentially significant alternative for the player.

Sport has also reported that a third club has entered the picture, with Deportivo La Coruna dreaming of securing Ounahi in what currently appears to be an extremely difficult deal.

Deportivo La Coruna have already addressed their left-back situation by signing Angelino, while the club’s main priority remains the recruitment of a centre-back. Even so, the sporting department has not ruled out adding another player for the attacking third, and Ounahi appears on paper to be a strong fit for that role.

The financial demands of the transfer are likely to make the move difficult for Deportivo La Coruna. Ounahi’s performances at the World Cup significantly increased his market value, complicating negotiations for clubs that had previously shown interest.

Celta Vigo were among the teams to express interest during the opening weeks of the summer, while Ajax, under Michel, also followed the midfielder. Any progress became more complicated after Ounahi’s World Cup displays helped raise his valuation.

For Barcelona, the need to strengthen midfield has become more pressing because of De Jong’s injury. Yet the Catalan club will have to contend with Real Betis, Deportivo La Coruna and other interested sides if it chooses to pursue the Morocco international.

Ounahi’s versatility, La Liga experience and recent form have made him an attractive option, but the growing competition and a potential fee of close to €25m mean his next move is unlikely to be straightforward.
