Jose Gomes says players’ spirit powered Al-Khaleej comeback against Al Fateh

Jose Gomes praised Al-Khaleej’s character after his side recovered from two goals down to beat Al Fateh 3-2 in the Saudi league.

Al-Khaleej appeared to be heading for defeat after Al Fateh built a two-goal lead, but a late fightback secured victory in the 10th round of the competition.

“The comeback after falling two goals behind was down to the spirit and fighting qualities of the players,” Gomes said at his post-match news conference.

Al Fateh took control through Lucas Haraslin, who scored in the 33rd minute, before Wilfried Kanga doubled their advantage in the 60th minute.

Al-Khaleej began their recovery when Moussa Barrow reduced the deficit in the 78th minute. Joshua King equalised six minutes later, and Omar Mascarell completed the turnaround with a goal in the 93rd minute.

Gomes said he did not believe his team deserved to lose when Al Fateh moved into a commanding position.

“When Al Fateh went ahead, I felt we did not deserve to lose,” said the Portuguese manager. “The team spirit was the key to our success and to achieving a positive result. They played with great enthusiasm and showed a lot of strength and determination.”

He also highlighted the contribution of Al-Khaleej’s forwards.

“The attackers took responsibility and helped us secure the win,” Gomes added.

The manager said his attacking approach and substitutions had played an important role in changing the match.

“I worked on the attacking side, and the attacking substitutions were successful. It was one of the best matches in the league,” he said.

The result lifted Al-Khaleej to 12 points and 10th place after 10 rounds. Al Fateh remain on six points in 16th position, one of the places leading to relegation.

Al-Khaleej’s next match will be against Ahli Jeddah on Thursday.
