Gavin Hunt backs Neo Rapoo to make an impact at Orlando Pirates

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has praised Orlando Pirates’ new left-back Neo Rapoo, saying he believes the defender can establish himself at the club if given sufficient playing time during the 2026/27 season.

Pirates have been active in the transfer market as they prepare for a campaign featuring domestic commitments and the CAF Champions League. The club has added several players to strengthen squad depth and help manage the physical demands of a crowded fixture list.

Rapoo is among the new arrivals to have attracted particular praise from Hunt, who previously worked with the defender at SuperSport United. Rapoo came through the club’s youth academy before progressing into the senior team during Hunt’s time in charge.

The experienced coach believes the 21-year-old has continued to improve and has the ability to compete strongly for a regular place at Orlando Pirates.

“Top, top player, fantastic player. Nice, he’s elevated, as I said, he gave me his debut many years ago,” said Hunt.

“He’s been elevating, there’s no stopping him. I just hope he gets the time to play, because as you know, big squads, you don’t play much. I just hope he gets the time to play.

“Once he gets time, I don’t think there’s anybody better than him there, you know, from all aspects.

“So I wish him well and it’s nice to see players come through.

Hunt’s comments come as Rapoo prepares to compete for opportunities in a squad that includes experienced wide player Hotto. Asked about the competition between the two players, Hunt pointed to the difference in their ages and suggested Rapoo’s signing reflected Pirates’ long-term planning.

When asked about competition with Hotto, he said, “Hotto is 37 and he’s 21, so there’s got to be a more future and I can see why he’s being bought.”

Hunt also acknowledged Hotto’s contribution over the course of his career. The coach previously worked with the player at Bidvest Wits and said he had enjoyed a successful career.

“I mean Hotto has had a great career, you know, from when I had him at [Bidvest] Wits.”

The arrival of Rapoo gives Orlando Pirates another option at left-back as the club balances its domestic programme with the demands of the CAF Champions League. Hunt’s assessment adds to the attention surrounding the defender ahead of the new season, while also highlighting the challenge young players face when joining a team with a large squad.

For Hunt, the key is ensuring that Rapoo receives enough minutes to demonstrate his ability. The Stellenbosch FC coach said he hoped the defender would be given the opportunity to play regularly, rather than being restricted by the competition within a deep squad.

The new Betway Premiership season will therefore provide Rapoo with the chance to build on his development at SuperSport United and begin the next stage of his career with Orlando Pirates.
