Pumas hold off Boland Cavaliers to end Currie Cup losing run

The Pumas ended a two-match losing streak by beating Boland Cavaliers 20-15 in Wellington, handing themselves their first Currie Cup victory of the campaign while inflicting a first defeat of the season on the hosts.

The visitors arrived looking for a first win after two successive losses, while Boland were buoyed by victories against the Bulls and Stormers XXIII.

The match began cautiously, with both teams struggling to turn possession and pressure into points. Nevaldo Fleurs, the former Sharks and Maties player, opened the scoring with a penalty inside six minutes to give the Pumas a 3-0 advantage.

The opening quarter was then disrupted by discipline problems on both sides. Boland flanker Kwanda Dimaza was shown a card in the 14th minute after a dangerous tackle on former Stormers player Willie Engelbrecht, leaving the Cavaliers temporarily reduced to 14 players.

Despite enjoying extended periods of control, the Pumas were unable to add to their lead before Boland created their first significant attacking opportunity. Inside centre Jurick Lewis broke through the visitors’ defence in the 22nd minute, but was held up just short of the tryline.

Boland did not have to wait long for their reward. Chris Smit delivered a cross-kick that found Xavier Mitchell, with the wing finishing in the right-hand corner to put the home side in front at 5-3.

The Cavaliers’ indiscipline continued to undermine their efforts. Pumas scrumhalf Thomas Bursey took advantage of a poorly organised Boland defence following a box kick outside the 22. The visitors regained the lead, and Fleurs’ conversion made it 10-5.

Boland were reduced to 14 players for a second time shortly before the interval when full-back James Tedder was sin-binned for a tackle on Pumas fullback Jay-cee Nel.

The Pumas made a fast start to the second half. Nevaldo Fleurs scored almost immediately after the restart, then converted to stretch the visitors’ advantage to 17-5.

Boland responded with greater aggression and a more direct approach, keeping the ball in hand and applying sustained pressure. Their replacements helped shift the momentum, although the Pumas’ discipline deteriorated and they had conceded 12 penalties by the 50th minute.

The Wellington side capitalised on that pressure in the 51st minute. A driving maul created the opening for Dayan van der Westhuizen to cross for Boland, with Tedder converting to bring the Cavaliers back to within five points at 17-12.

That was the final try of the contest. Boland wing Jayden Bantom kicked a penalty in the 69th minute before Fleurs responded with one for the Pumas in the 78th minute.

The late scoring left the visitors 20-15 ahead at the final whistle, securing their first Currie Cup win and ending Boland’s unbeaten start to the season.
