Lewandowski lights up Soldier Field to complete Chicago Fire comeback

Robert Lewandowski scored twice on his first appearance in front of Chicago Fire supporters at Soldier Field as his side came from behind to beat Charlotte.

The Poland striker, formerly of Barcelona, produced his first brace in Major League Soccer on a memorable home debut, with 32,183 fans attending the match in Chicago, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

Charlotte took the lead in the 18th minute through Spanish forward Pep Biel. However, Chicago needed only 93 seconds to respond, with Lewandowski finding the bottom corner with a precise right-footed shot that beat the goalkeeper at the near post.

The 37-year-old completed the turnaround after the interval. He collected an assist from Finland international Robin Lod before finishing from inside the penalty area with an impressive strike beyond the goalkeeper.

Lewandowski’s performance ensured Chicago Fire secured victory after falling behind early, while giving the club’s home crowd an immediate glimpse of the impact expected from their experienced forward.

Griezmann creates but Orlando lose

Antoine Griezmann registered an assist but could not prevent Orlando City from suffering a 3-2 defeat away to New York Red Bulls.

The former Atletico de Madrid forward failed to score, although he created Orlando City’s second goal. His contribution was not enough to earn his team any points from the contest.

There was also late drama in Philadelphia, where Philadelphia Union overturned a two-goal deficit against Atlanta United during the final 20 minutes.

Atlanta had played with 10 men for more than an hour, but remained in control until Milan Iloski began Philadelphia’s recovery in the 73rd minute.

Neil Pierre then equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time before Ezequiel Aladue completed the comeback one minute later, scoring in the 97th minute.

Montreal also recovered from a two-goal disadvantage to draw 2-2 with New England Revolution on home soil.

The visitors established their advantage during the first half through Spanish midfielder Carles Gil and Dor Turgeman. Montreal responded after the break, with Colombia defender Brayan Vera and Prince Owusu scoring to bring the Canadian side level.

The meeting between the Western Conference’s leading teams, Los Angeles FC and Vancouver Whitecaps, ended in a 1-1 draw.

Heung-Min Son gave the Los Angeles side the lead, but Vancouver secured a point when Germany international Thomas Muller converted a penalty in the 76th minute.

The result kept the two teams level after a contest between the conference’s top sides, while Lewandowski’s brace remained the standout individual display of the latest round of matches.
