Hoerskool Menlopark rugby match abandoned after mass brawl involving players and parents

A Noordvaal Cup match between Hoerskool Menlopark and Hoerskool Dr. E.G. Jansen was abandoned after a large-scale fight involving schoolboys and parents erupted on the field.

Menlopark were leading 36-5 when the match was stopped, with the confrontation breaking out after 40 minutes of play.

The incident quickly attracted widespread criticism on social media, much of it aimed at the Hoerskool Dr. E.G. Jansen contingent. Posts circulating online alleged that parents had become involved in the violence and struck a schoolboy.

“Can’t honestly believe E.G. Jansen’s behaviour today at the first-team game. Parents getting involved and hitting a schoolboy,” one user wrote.

Another post said: “You E.G. Jansens can’t even win a game at Menlo, never mind the fight between parents and high school kids. Weak, terrible, shame.”

Commentator, singer and presenter Pieter Koen was broadcasting the match when the disorder unfolded. As spectators left the stands and moved towards the incident at the far end of the field, he expressed his disbelief on air.

“Ag no, guys! What’s going on now? What’s happening here?!”

Koen then highlighted the inappropriate nature of the scenes at a school sporting event.

“We’re parents here for a rugby match, not a boxing match.”

Videos of the confrontation were shared widely online, providing further footage of the disorder as the match descended into chaos.

Thinus Diedericks, chairman of the Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association, confirmed that the organisation was aware of what had happened and condemned the behaviour.

“Reports have already been requested from both schools and the necessary investigation will be conducted. Action will then be taken accordingly,” he said in a statement.

The association will consider the reports from Hoerskool Menlopark and Hoerskool Dr. E.G. Jansen before deciding what action should follow.

Diedericks also called on people to refrain from making further comments about the incident online while the matter is being investigated. The appeal came as footage and reactions continued to circulate on social media, where the confrontation had already prompted strong condemnation.

The match had been dominated by Menlopark before it was halted, with the home side holding a 31-point advantage over Hoerskool Dr. E.G. Jansen. No further play took place after the fight, leaving the Noordvaal Cup fixture abandoned.
