After six successful years at Gor Mahia, Gad Mathews believes the time was right to embrace a new challenge and continue his career journey with Nairobi United.

The experienced goalkeeper has completed a two-year move to the SportPesa League side, ending a memorable spell with K’Ogalo where he established himself as one of the club’s most reliable figures and left behind a legacy of trophies, leadership and unforgettable performances.

At 30, Mathews is not viewing the move as an ending but as the beginning of another chapter. His arrival at Nairobi United represents a fresh opportunity to contribute to a club with ambitions of challenging Kenya’s established football powers.

“I am grateful to Nairobi United for believing in me and giving me this opportunity,” Mathews said.

Leaving behind a Gor Mahia legacy

Mathews departs Gor Mahia after a remarkable six-year run that saw him become a key figure in the club’s success.

During his time at the Kenyan giants, he helped K’Ogalo secure league titles, lift the FKF Cup and earned individual recognition by winning the 2022/23 Golden Glove award.

His journey at Gor Mahia began in 2020 after previous spells with Western Stima, Kariobangi Sharks, Kisumu AllStars and Wazito. What initially looked like a routine signing soon developed into one of the club’s most successful goalkeeping acquisitions in recent years.

Mathews quickly claimed the number one position, delivering consistent performances that made him a favourite among supporters and a trusted figure within the squad.

One of his most memorable moments came in the 2021 FKF Cup final against AFC Leopards, where his penalty shootout heroics helped Gor Mahia secure the trophy and book a place in continental competition.

“I have enjoyed every moment of my career and every club I have represented has helped shape the player I am today,” he said.

Beyond his ability between the posts, Mathews became an influential voice in the dressing room. His leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband during the later stages of his Gor Mahia career, particularly as the club navigated a period of transition.

A new mission at Nairobi United

The move to Nairobi United comes at a time when the club is aiming to build a stronger presence in Kenyan football.

Mathews arrives with valuable top-flight experience and a winning mentality, qualities expected to help a side determined to compete at the highest level.

“My responsibility now is to work hard every day and help this team achieve its ambitions,” he said.

“I leave Gor Mahia with wonderful memories and deep appreciation for everyone who supported me throughout my journey,” he said.

His immediate goal is clear: bring his experience, leadership and winning mentality to Nairobi United and help the club turn its ambitions into achievements.

“My focus is simple – give everything for this badge, help my teammates improve and make our supporters proud,” Mathews said.
