Koulibaly signals Senegal’s changing of the guard after 2030 World Cup doubt

Kalidou Koulibaly has cast doubt on whether he will still be playing for Senegal at the 2030 World Cup, suggesting the country’s most successful generation is nearing the end of its international journey.

The 35-year-old Senegal captain discussed the final stage of his career in a video published by Al-Hilal, during a conversation with team-mate Mohammed Al-Owais.

Speaking alongside the experienced 34-year-old Saudi goalkeeper, the former Chelsea defender acknowledged that time is beginning to work against him.

“We are closer to the end than the beginning of our careers. You still have time, even until the next World Cup. I don’t think I do. Four years is a long time. The youngsters are coming through,” Koulibaly said.

It is Koulibaly’s first significant public comment on his international future since Senegal were eliminated by Belgium in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, a tournament during which the defender faced strong criticism.

Although he did not formally announce his retirement, his remarks indicate that he is unlikely to continue with the Lions of Teranga until the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.

However, the Senegal captain could still have one major international tournament ahead of him.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 18 July, could become Koulibaly’s final international target. He will be 36 by then, but his experience and standing as captain could remain valuable to a squad entering a period of reconstruction.

His decision may also be influenced by the identity of Senegal’s next manager. The Senegalese Football Federation is still searching for a successor to Pape Thiaw.

Koulibaly has been one of the leading figures in the most decorated generation in Senegal’s history. Alongside Sadio Mane, Edouard Mendy, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Cheikhou Kouyate, he helped define a team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 and secured qualification for several World Cups.

That group is now ageing, while younger players are competing for their places. The transition is becoming unavoidable for the Lions of Teranga.

Koulibaly may yet remain involved for several more months as Senegal begin that handover. But his comments suggest the country is already preparing to close one of the defining chapters in its football history.

The defender’s immediate international future will therefore be watched closely, with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations potentially providing one final opportunity for him to lead Senegal at a major tournament.
