Mosimane backs Mbuthuma to make his mark in Bafana Bafana return

Pitso Mosimane has defended his decision to select Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma in his first Bafana Bafana squad since returning as head coach.

The 24-year-old is included in Mosimane’s 30-man group for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea on 26 September and Eritrea on 30 September, followed by a friendly against Egypt on 4 October.

Mbuthuma’s selection has prompted questions because of his recent goalscoring record. However, Mosimane said the forward offers qualities beyond his statistics, pointing to his physical presence and desire to succeed.

“Well, I don’t know what other people are saying and I don’t know why people brand him as an enemy,” said Mosimane.

“I think he’s a national team player. He scores goals for Orlando Pirates. I think you’ve seen him scoring few goals in Orlando Stadium.”

Mosimane accepted that Mbuthuma could have scored more but believes the striker has done enough to deserve his chance with South Africa.

“And yes, maybe he’s not scoring as much as you want, but he does score and he’s got a physical presence also and he’s hungry.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach also called on supporters to allow Mbuthuma time to demonstrate what he can contribute at international level.

“Give him a chance.”

South Africa will meet Guinea at Orlando Stadium on 26 September before facing Eritrea. The squad will then travel into the friendly against Egypt on 4 October as Mosimane begins his second spell in charge of Bafana Bafana.

Mbuthuma’s inclusion reflects the coach’s belief that the striker’s physical attributes, hunger and overall contribution can benefit his system, even if his current goalscoring figures are below expectations.
