Yan Diomande’s Real Madrid move brings mentor’s financial role into focus

Yan Diomande’s expected transfer to Real Madrid has drawn attention to the people behind the young Ivory Coast international’s rapid rise, after an investigation alleged that his mentor, Desire “Dez” Bamba, received almost €4m from a series of moves involving the player. The claims remain disputed and have not been established by a public court ruling.

The investigation by Romain Molina examines Diomande’s entourage and the role played by Bamba, who is said to have been central to the player’s development. Bamba founded the Academie internationale de football du Sud-Comoe and reportedly identified Diomande at the beginning of his career in Yopougon.

He is also said to have helped arrange Diomande’s move first to the United States and later to Europe. Bamba has been portrayed as a spiritual father figure to the player, with a significant influence on his football education, schooling and wider personal development.

According to the investigation, Bamba subsequently benefited from several commissions linked to Diomande’s transfers. One of the arrangements reportedly involved a clause granting 20% of any future resale, with the payment made through his academy.

The total amount allegedly received by Bamba is estimated at about €4m, equivalent to more than 2.6bn CFA francs.

Diomande’s career has also reportedly involved several changes of agent, competing mandates and legal procedures concerning his representation and image rights. Those disputes are said to have unsettled a number of leading European clubs.

Real Madrid is nevertheless continuing to advance with the proposed transfer, despite reservations from the club’s legal advisers and claims made by different parties connected to the player’s situation.

The allegations have prompted different interpretations of Bamba’s involvement. Some observers argue that the mentor enriched himself at the expense of a player who was still very young. Others defend Bamba, pointing to the money and resources he invested over many years in Diomande’s training and support, long before the player’s emergence at the highest level.

That defence does not rule out the possibility, according to the report, that Bamba may later have taken advantage of his position.

At present, neither the amounts cited nor the mechanisms through which they were allegedly paid have been confirmed by a publicly available judicial decision. The claims therefore remain contested as Diomande moves closer to joining Real Madrid.
