Kenyan referee Josephine Wanjiku appointed for Egypt’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match against Malawi

Kenyan international referee Josephine Wanjiku has been appointed to take charge of Egypt’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations meeting with Malawi.

The appointment was made by the Confederation of African Football’s Referees Committee ahead of the Group C fixture, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 1 August 2026.

Egypt and Malawi will meet at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off set for 20:00 Cairo time. The match will be the second game for both sides in Group C of the tournament.

Egypt will go into the contest looking to recover from a difficult opening result. The women’s national team suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat by Zambia in their first group match, leaving them under pressure to respond against Malawi.

Wanjiku’s appointment means the match will be overseen by a Kenyan official as Egypt continue their campaign in Morocco. Her selection was confirmed by the African football governing body’s main refereeing committee.

Egypt are appearing at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for only the third time in their history. This is also their first participation in the competition for 10 years, giving the tournament added significance for the national team.

Their defeat by Zambia was the opening result in Group C, which also includes Nigeria and Malawi. Nigeria are the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having won the competition 10 times.

The group therefore contains a side with a record haul of titles, as well as an Egypt team returning to the tournament after a decade away. Malawi complete the four-team section and will face Egypt in Rabat in a fixture that carries importance for both teams after the opening round.

The match is due to be played on Saturday evening at the Moulay Hassan Stadium. Egypt’s immediate objective will be to put the six-goal loss to Zambia behind them and produce a stronger performance in their second Group C match.

Malawi will also be competing for a positive result as the two teams meet in the second round of matches. With Nigeria and Zambia also part of the group, the outcome in Rabat will form an important part of the section’s developing picture.

Wanjiku will referee the game as Egypt continue their return to Africa’s leading women’s international competition.
