Nigeria’s Josh Maja set for Ligue 1 return with Le Havre

Nigeria international Josh Maja is close to joining French side Le Havre after leaving English Championship club West Bromwich Albion at the end of his contract.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the 27-year-old striker is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Ligue 1 club, with the agreement including an option to extend his stay by a further season.

The move would mark Maja’s return to French football after previously enjoying successful spells with Bordeaux.

Maja set for return to familiar surroundings

The Nigerian forward spent three seasons with Bordeaux between 2019 and 2021 and again during the 2022-23 campaign.

His most productive season came in Ligue 2, when he scored 16 goals to help establish himself as one of the division’s leading strikers.

After leaving West Brom as a free agent this summer following the expiration of his three-year contract, Maja is now poised for a fresh challenge in France’s top flight.

Le Havre seek attacking reinforcements

Le Havre entered the transfer market in search of a new centre-forward after the departure of Issa Soumaré, who joined fellow Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The Normandy club view Maja’s experience in both French and English football as a valuable addition as they prepare for another battle to preserve their Ligue 1 status.

The striker is expected to add depth and firepower to a squad aiming to remain in the top division beyond the end of the 2026-27 season.

Super Eagles striker brings experience

At 27, Maja arrives with considerable experience at club and international level, having represented Nigeria and played in England and France.

Le Havre will hope the Super Eagles forward can rediscover the goalscoring form he displayed during his previous spell in French football as the club looks to secure another season among the country’s elite.
