FIFA chief backs Morocco to stage ‘most beautiful’ World Cup in history

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence that Morocco will play a leading role in delivering “the most beautiful World Cup in history” when it co-hosts the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal.

Speaking during Morocco’s Throne Day celebrations in M’diq on Thursday, Infantino praised the North African nation’s football culture and hospitality, saying supporters from around the world would be warmly welcomed during the centenary edition of the global showpiece.

The FIFA president was attending the official reception hosted by King Mohammed VI to mark the 27th anniversary of his accession to the throne.

Infantino honoured to join celebrations

“It is a true honor for me to be here in this great country, the Kingdom of Morocco, to take part in the Throne Day celebrations,” Infantino said.

“I feel as though I am in my own country.”

The FIFA chief described his presence at the national celebrations as a privilege, underlining his close ties with Morocco as the country accelerates preparations for the 2030 World Cup.

Confidence grows over 2030 tournament

Infantino also reiterated his excitement about the tournament, which Morocco will stage jointly with Spain and Portugal.

“Morocco, together with Spain and Portugal, will host what will certainly be the most beautiful World Cup in history,” Infantino said.

He added that a competition hosted in “one of the world’s most beautiful countries” had all the ingredients to become an unforgettable event for players and supporters alike.

Morocco’s football passion praised

The FIFA president highlighted Morocco’s strong football culture, pointing to the enthusiasm of the country’s supporters, whose backing helped propel the Atlas Lions to a historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Infantino said Moroccan fans are renowned for celebrating their national team with pride and passion and predicted that the same spirit would be extended to visitors from across the globe.

According to the FIFA chief, Morocco’s hospitality and love for football will help transform the 2030 World Cup into a historic celebration of the sport for Africa and the wider world.
