Paarl derby tops blockbuster weekend of South African school rugby fixtures

An action-packed programme of school rugby across South Africa on Saturday will be headlined by the fierce traditional derby between Paarl Boys and Paarl Gim, widely regarded as one of the biggest occasions in the schools game.

The clash between the two Paarl powerhouses will once again draw national attention, with the fixture seen by many as the standout encounter of a crowded calendar. The meeting of Paarl Boys and Paarl Gim is traditionally one of the showpiece events of the season and is expected to command a large crowd and significant interest beyond the immediate school communities.

While the Paarl derby provides the main focal point, there is a full list of notable fixtures scheduled around the country, with results to be updated as they are confirmed.

Pretoria and Gauteng heavyweights in action

Several of the leading Pretoria and Gauteng schools are set for high-profile match-ups.

Affies are due to host Waterkloof in one of the weekend’s key Pretoria derbies, with both sides typically among the stronger rugby schools in the region. Waterkloof will also feature in a second fixture on the list, taking on Helpmekaar in another eye-catching encounter.

MenloPark face EG Jansen in a contest that traditionally carries plenty of intensity, while Garsfontein travel to Middelburg for what is expected to be a demanding away assignment. Middelburg are also listed to play Zwartkop, adding a second fixture for the Mpumalanga side over the course of the weekend.

In Johannesburg, KES are scheduled to meet Jeppe in another of the country’s storied school rivalries, a fixture that usually produces a tight contest and strong local interest.

Other Gauteng and surrounding-region fixtures include Kempton Park’s trip to Nelspruit, Rustenburg against Monument, Ligbron versus Piet Retief, Lichtenburg against Secunda and a meeting between Eldoraigne and Pietersburg. Transvalia will face Wesvalia, while Klerksdorp are down to play Montana and Marais Viljoen are set to meet Ben Vorster.

Cape schools prepare for traditional clashes

In the Western Cape, a number of historic schools will take to the field alongside the headline Paarl derby.

Wynberg play Bishops in a fixture that brings together two of Cape Town’s oldest rugby-playing schools, while SACS are scheduled to host Rondebosch in another long-standing southern suburbs rivalry.

Stellenberg will face Durbanville in a regional showdown, with Strand up against Bellville in another Western Cape meeting. Paul Roos, one of the country’s most renowned rugby nurseries, are set to play Boland Landbou in Stellenbosch, while Parel Vallei take on Tygerberg.

Eastern Cape and Free State fixtures add depth to schedule

A busy slate of matches is also planned in the Eastern Cape and Free State.

In the Eastern Cape, Queen’s are due to meet Selborne in a traditional schools clash that often attracts strong local support. Nico Milan will play Daniel Pienaar, while Marlow are scheduled to face Pearson, adding further depth to the region’s programme.

Across the Free State, Jim Fouche will take on Trio, with Sentraal up against Bethlehem Voortrekker in another provincial confrontation. Witteberg are listed to meet Diamantveld, while Goudveld will face Fichardtpark, rounding off a competitive set of fixtures in the central part of the country.
