Betway Premiership 2026-27: Pirates face fierce challenge from Sundowns, Chiefs and AmaZulu in title race

Orlando Pirates will begin their Betway Premiership title defence with Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu all convinced they can mount sustained challenges for South Africa’s biggest domestic prize in 2026-27.

The new campaign is widely expected to develop into a four-way battle, with last season’s top sides all strengthening and openly targeting the championship over the course of the 30-game season.

Pirates, who ended a 14-year wait for the league crown last term, now carry the weight of expectation as they attempt to secure back-to-back titles. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou must defend the trophy while managing the added strain of a CAF Champions League campaign alongside three domestic cup competitions.

The Buccaneers have lost Relebohile Mofokeng, whose departure leaves a notable gap in the squad, but the club has focused on shrewd, targeted recruitment. The emphasis has been on building a balanced group rather than relying on standout individuals.

A pre-season tour of Spain offered an early glimpse of Ouaddou’s priorities, with the technical team placing stronger focus on tactical flexibility, improved defensive structure and greater use of the full squad. If Pirates can cope with a congested fixture list at home and in Africa, they are viewed as having a realistic chance of retaining their title.

Sundowns driven by last season’s near miss

Mamelodi Sundowns approach the season with a sense of unfinished business after being edged into second place last year.

Miguel Cardoso still commands what many regard as the deepest squad in the country, with strong competition for places across all positions. That depth has long underpinned Sundowns’ ability to challenge on several fronts.

The Brazilians typically start every campaign as favourites and, this time, they have the added motivation of trying to reclaim the championship from Pirates. Once again, they must juggle the demands of the Premiership with another tilt at the CAF Champions League.

History suggests Sundowns have the resources to handle that dual challenge, and their squad strength means they are expected to be prominent in the title picture throughout the season.

Chiefs rebuild under Da Cruz

At Kaizer Chiefs, there is a renewed sense of optimism at Naturena following a busy transfer window and an encouraging pre-season under new coach Fernando Da Cruz.

Da Cruz has reshaped the squad with the clear objective of making Chiefs more competitive after several seasons marked by inconsistency. The Glamour Boys will also be involved in the CAF Confederation Cup, adding another layer to their schedule.

Supporters are unlikely to settle for mid-table stability. They will expect a more sustained push towards the top end of the table, with regular involvement in the title race rather than sporadic bursts of form.

For Chiefs, winning the league would represent a major breakthrough, but even remaining in genuine contention for most of the campaign would be viewed as a significant step forward for a club determined to re-establish itself among the elite of South African football.

AmaZulu eye role as dark horses

AmaZulu, meanwhile, arrive with quieter momentum but genuine belief after one of their strongest seasons in recent memory under Arthur Zwane.

Usuthu finished fourth last term, narrowly missing out on continental qualification. That performance signalled they can compete with the league’s leading clubs when they reach their best levels.

Zwane has consistently framed AmaZulu’s progress as part of a long-term project, underlining the importance of continuity and gradual improvement. With another year together, the squad is expected to benefit from increased cohesion and consistency.

The key challenge for Usuthu will be turning tight contests into wins. If they can convert more of last season’s draws into three points while maintaining their solid foundations, they could emerge as genuine outsiders in the race for the title.

With Pirates intent on proving last season’s triumph was no one-off, Sundowns determined to reclaim their lost crown, Chiefs pushing to translate a rebuild into results, and AmaZulu aiming to show their upward curve is sustainable, the 2026-27 Betway Premiership is set up for one of its most competitive title races in years.
