Goodman Mosele leaves Orlando Pirates to sign permanent Chippa United deal and take captain’s armband

Goodman Mosele has ended his spell at Orlando Pirates to join Chippa United on a permanent deal, with the midfielder also confirmed as captain for the 2026-27 season.

The 25-year-old, who had been on loan at Chippa United from Pirates, will now lead the Gqeberha club after his move was announced on Thursday.

Chippa United revealed the agreement by confirming both his long-term switch and his new leadership role, stating: “The River has found its course, now it leads the way. Goodman Mosele is officially a permanent Chilli Boy and our captain for the 2026/27 season.”

The deal closes the chapter on Mosele’s time with Pirates, often nicknamed the Sea Robbers and the Buccaneers, as he prepares to start the new campaign at the heart of Chippa’s plans.

Key role at Chippa United earns permanent stay

Mosele initially joined Chippa United on loan in July 2023 after struggling to secure a regular starting place at Orlando Pirates.

During his time in Gqeberha, he developed into a central figure for the Chilli Boys across the next three seasons, delivering steady performances in midfield and becoming one of the side’s most dependable players.

There were periods when he briefly returned to feature for Pirates, but his most consistent football came at Chippa United, where he has now been rewarded with both a permanent contract and the captaincy.

Chippa’s decision underlines the value they place on Mosele’s influence on and off the pitch as they look ahead to the upcoming campaign.

Pirates spell comes to an end

Mosele arrived at Orlando Pirates in 2021 from Baroka FC, having made his name as one of the most promising midfielders in the Premier Soccer League while with the Limpopo club.

His move to Pirates was seen at the time as a major step for a rising talent, following standout performances at Baroka FC that had highlighted his potential in the top flight.

However, fierce competition for places at Pirates meant he did not always command a regular starting role, leading to loan opportunities elsewhere and, ultimately, his extended stay with Chippa United.

The conclusion of his stint in Soweto brings to an end a five-year association with the Buccaneers, during which he sought to establish himself at one of South Africa’s most high-profile clubs.

Chippa beat Durban City to midfielder’s signature

Chippa United’s success in securing Mosele permanently came amid reported interest from newly promoted Durban City.

Durban City were believed to be close to finalising a loan agreement with Orlando Pirates for the midfielder, which would have seen him spend the season in KwaZulu-Natal.

Instead, Chippa United moved to turn his temporary stay into a permanent transfer, effectively outmanoeuvring Durban City in the race for his services.

By completing the deal and naming him captain, Chippa have underlined their intention to build around Mosele as they prepare for the new season, with the midfielder now set to lead the Chilli Boys into the next phase of his career.
