Barcelona notified by FIFA over Atletico Madrid complaint in Julian Alvarez transfer dispute

Barcelona have received formal notification from FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation after Atletico Madrid lodged a complaint over the Catalan club’s pursuit of forward Julian Alvarez.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid have accused Barcelona of negotiating with the Argentina international without the club’s consent, despite Alvarez being under contract at the Estadio Metropolitano until June 2030.

The complaint has prompted the Spanish Football Federation to begin an initial process, under which Barcelona will be granted an official deadline to submit their defence and respond to Atletico’s allegations.

Barcelona confident over outcome

Barcelona are said to be relaxed about the prospect of disciplinary action and believe the complaint will not result in any sanctions.

The club’s position, as reported, is that Julian Alvarez himself made clear his desire to leave Atletico Madrid, and that they have respected the relevant regulations in their approach.

Barcelona also maintain that they submitted a formal offer worth €100m directly to Atletico Madrid, rather than approaching the player or his entourage without the club’s permission.

The Catalan side do not consider the matter closed from a sporting perspective and, according to the same report, had been waiting for a further move from Alvarez before making what was described as a final attempt to sign him.

Atletico stand firm on Alvarez

Atletico Madrid, for their part, remain determined to keep the 24-year-old and have consistently rejected the idea of a sale.

Club president Enrique Cerezo has previously stated that the striker is “not for sale”, underlining Atletico’s stance that Alvarez is considered a key part of their long-term plans and is tied to a lengthy contract.

Alvarez has been a prominent figure for Atletico Madrid since joining the club, making 106 appearances in all competitions. During that time he has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists.

The numbers underline why Atletico are resisting Barcelona’s interest and why the dispute over the manner of the negotiations has now escalated to involve both FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation.
