Neo Mokoena: Former Orlando Pirates winger joins AmaZulu ahead of new season

AmaZulu have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of former Orlando Pirates winger Neo Mokoena as they step up preparations for the new campaign.

Usuthu confirmed that Mokoena has joined the club after parting ways with Orlando Pirates, where he had been on the books of the Soweto giants known as the Buccaneers.

The move marks the first time Mokoena will compete at this level, and the winger says he is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

“I’m grateful to join AmaZulu and thankful to the club for giving me this opportunity,” Mokoena said, in a statement released by AmaZulu.

“The atmosphere at training has been amazing. The guys have welcomed me really well, and the intensity is on another level. It’s my first time competing at this level, so I’ll continue working hard and pushing myself every day.”

Mokoena outlines playing style and ambitions

Mokoena, who operates on the flank, believes his attributes will add a different dimension to the AmaZulu attack.

He explained that he is gradually settling into his new surroundings and building an understanding with his team-mates.

He continued, “I’m finding my feet with my new teammates bit by bit. My goal is to help the team in every way I can. I’m a winger who enjoys taking on defenders. Dribbling is one of my biggest strengths, and I have good pace. I enjoy expressing myself on the ball, and that gives me confidence.”

AmaZulu have been active in shaping their squad ahead of the Premiership season, with Mokoena’s arrival adding further depth in wide areas as the club seek to improve on recent campaigns.

The confirmation of his signing comes amid wider off-field focus on AmaZulu, including recent speculation around the future of coach Brandon Truter’s predecessor at the club, with former boss Brandon Truter and his successor often subjects of ongoing discussion. That context has placed added emphasis on the club’s transfer business as they look to stabilise and push up the table.

Mokoena’s switch also follows a period of movement across the South African football landscape, with clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns active in the market and South African players abroad continuing to attract attention.
