Kruger United boss relishes Kaizer Chiefs test in ‘perfect’ top-flight debut

Newly-promoted Kruger United will launch their first-ever Betway Premiership campaign with what head coach Abram Mongoya has called “the perfect situation” – a glamour opening-day meeting with Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday (15:00).

Mongoya believes facing the Soweto giants immediately gives his Mpumalanga side the ideal platform to showcase themselves after storming to promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Kruger United, nicknamed The Village Boys, clinched the second-tier title in emphatic fashion last season, finishing top of the NFD table with 62 points from 30 matches. They ended eight points clear of second-placed Cape Town City, securing automatic promotion and a first taste of top-flight football.

Now they step into the spotlight against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, with their coach adamant he would not have chosen any other opponent for their Premiership bow.

“I think yes, a big yes,” Mongoya said when asked if he would have picked Chiefs himself, had he been able to set the fixtures.

“Because there are a lot of advantages when you look at it: an exciting fixture for both sets of supporters, the thing they have been longing for. We have only had TS Galaxy to bring football to Mpumalanga.

“But also it’s a chance for the players to showcase their talent. Getting a Chiefs at a time when the coaches have not yet settled as well is a bit of a perfect situation.

“Hopefully it goes our way; we will try and impose our game as much as we can.”

Chiefs under new management

While Kruger United arrive buoyed by a dominant promotion campaign, Kaizer Chiefs begin the new season seeking greater consistency after an uneven league run last term.

Amakhosi finished third in the Premiership with 54 points, having seen their title push unravel midway through the campaign. That stutter prompted significant change in the dugout.

Chiefs have turned to new head coach Fernando da Cruz to stabilise the team, and the Frenchman has already lifted a trophy in pre-season, guiding the club to a 1-0 win over Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup.

Mongoya, however, views Chiefs’ early transitional phase as an opportunity for his side, arguing that a high-profile opponent still bedding in a new technical team could be vulnerable on opening day.

Lower-division hoodoo offers Kruger hope

Kruger United’s confidence is further fuelled by Chiefs’ difficulties in recent years against lower-division clubs, particularly in knockout competitions.

Despite Amakhosi’s morale-boosting Toyota Cup success, their struggles against second-tier opposition remain fresh in the memory. The Glamour Boys suffered a shock Nedbank Cup elimination last season when they were knocked out by Milford FC on penalties, underlining a pattern of cup upsets.

With Chiefs still adapting to Da Cruz’s methods and the reshaped backroom staff, Mongoya’s squad will look to capitalise on any uncertainty and attempt to engineer a memorable upset in front of their home supporters.

Saturday’s fixture at Mbombela Stadium will not only mark Kruger United’s first appearance in the Betway Premiership but also the most high-profile match in the club’s history, with Mongoya determined that his players seize the occasion.
