Iraola targets best version of Wirtz as Liverpool confirm Gomez injury lay-off

Andoni Iraola says he feels far better equipped for life at Liverpool after a year in the Premier League, as he targets extracting the “best version” of Florian Wirtz and confirms Joe Gomez will be sidelined for several weeks.

The Spaniard, who has signed a contract at Anfield running until the summer of 2028, took over after Arne Slot was dismissed and believes both he and the team are moving in the right direction during pre-season.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Iraola said: “I think I am better now than I was last year, after gaining an extra year of experience in the Premier League.”

He added that expectations at the club have risen and that he must adapt accordingly as Liverpool prepare for the new campaign.

“The challenge now is different, as the expectations have become bigger,” he said. “As a coach I have to adapt tactically to new circumstances. The pre-season tour is going well and I am happy, but we still have to fully integrate the experienced players. We are heading in the right direction.”

Wirtz central to Iraola’s plans

Iraola highlighted the importance of new signing Florian Wirtz and made clear he wants the Germany international playing at his peak.

On Wirtz, he said: “Like the rest of the players, but with Florian in particular, we need the best version of him.”

Iraola stressed that Liverpool recruited Wirtz with a clear plan for how he will fit into the side and underlined the attacking midfielder’s suitability for his style of play.

“We know very well what he can offer, as he suits our playing style,” he said. “I see him in the position behind the striker, and we will start working with him in this role.”

The Liverpool manager described Wirtz as a complete player but believes there is still room for development.

“He is a complete player, and we want to add even more to his abilities,” Iraola said. “He is in an excellent frame of mind.”

Gomez ruled out for weeks

Iraola also confirmed that defender Joe Gomez is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury.

Bringing his comments to a close, he said: “Joe is suffering from an injury, and that was clear. He will be out for several weeks.”

The setback leaves Liverpool without a versatile defensive option as they continue their preparations for the season, with Gomez having been used across the back line in recent campaigns.

Iraola’s growing experience

Iraola’s sense of readiness is underpinned by his track record in management to date. Across his coaching career he has taken charge of 341 matches, recording 135 wins, 93 draws and 113 defeats.

He believes that extra year in the Premier League and his overall body of work will help him respond to the heightened demands at Liverpool, as he looks to mould a side built around key figures such as Wirtz while coping with early injury problems like Gomez’s absence.
