Mariko seals permanent switch to ORBIT College after Orlando Pirates exit

Abdoulaye Mariko has left Orlando Pirates to join ORBIT College on a permanent deal, with the midfielder signing ahead of the 2026-27 Betway Premiership campaign.

The 24-year-old, who did not make a competitive appearance for Pirates, has agreed a one-year contract with ORBIT College, which includes an option to extend. The club are rebuilding their squad as they aim for an immediate return to the South African top flight following relegation.

Mariko spent last season away from Pirates, initially on loan at Chippa United before finishing the campaign at ORBIT College. His performances there have now earned him a full-time move.

The Malian midfielder was previously an influential figure at Djoliba, one of Mali’s leading clubs, where he played a prominent role in their strong CAF Champions League run in the 2024-25 season. That form convinced Pirates to bring him to South Africa, but his time in Soweto ultimately passed without an official debut.

Mariko will now be looking to use his permanent switch to ORBIT College as a chance to revive the momentum he had built at Djoliba and to rediscover the level that persuaded Pirates to sign him in the first place.

While Abdoulaye Mariko moves on, another player sharing his surname remains in the Pirates squad for the coming season.

That namesake, a more attack-minded footballer who also arrived at Pirates from Djoliba in the same transfer window, enjoyed a more productive first year at the club. He featured in 12 matches under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and is viewed as a candidate for a more prominent role in the forthcoming campaign.

The contrasting fortunes of the two players underline how differently careers can unfold, even when they begin from the same club and arrive at the same destination at the same time.
