Morocco coach Vilda wary of ‘dangerous’ Algeria in high-stakes Women’s Afcon group clash

Morocco head coach Jorge Vilda has branded Algeria a “formidable opponent” as the North African neighbours prepare to meet in a potentially decisive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 group match in Rabat on Thursday.

The hosts and Algeria both opened their Group A campaigns with convincing wins and clean sheets, setting up a derby at Stade Moulay El Hassan that could decide the first team to reach the quarter-finals.

Morocco sit top of the group on goal difference after sweeping aside Kenya 4-0 in their opener. Sakina Ouzraoui and Maryem Atiq were both on the scoresheet, while Ibtissam Jraidi struck twice to complete an emphatic victory.

Algeria also impressed in their first outing, beating Senegal 2-0. Captain Marine Dafeur led by example and 20-year-old Melissa Bethi added further attacking spark as the Algerians made a strong start to their campaign.

Vilda full of respect for Algeria

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Vilda was keen to underline the scale of the test awaiting his side against their regional rivals.

The Morocco coach praised Algeria’s quality and resilience, describing them as a tough, well-organised side and highlighting the threat posed across their squad. He stressed that his players would need to match Algeria’s intensity and discipline to maintain their early momentum in the tournament.

Vilda also made clear that Morocco’s objective is not just to ride the wave of home support but to secure victory and with it the first confirmed place in the last eight.

Quarter-final spot on the line

With both teams on three points after one match, the encounter in Rabat carries major implications for the shape of Group A.
