Schoolboy rugby: Paarl Gim and Rondebosch share viral moment of sportsmanship in Cape clash

A schoolboy rugby match between Paarl Gimnasium and Rondebosch has gone viral worldwide after both teams combined to help a first-time player score his maiden try in an extraordinary act of sportsmanship.

The incident took place on Saturday during an H-team fixture at Paarl Gimnasium, where matric pupil Niel Spamer was turning out in rugby for the first time this year. Spamer, who had never scored a try before, was at the centre of a planned effort by his teammates to get him over the line.

Once Rondebosch realised what Paarl Gimnasium were trying to do, they chose not to shut the move down. Instead, the Cape Town side deliberately eased their defensive line, creating space for Spamer to launch a 40-metre run to the tryline.

As he crossed to score his first-ever try, players from both teams sprinted towards him. What followed was an unusually unified celebration for a schoolboy fixture, with opponents and teammates alike surrounding Spamer in a shared moment that has since captured attention far beyond the touchline.

Paarl Gimnasium principal Paul Viljoen praised both sets of players afterwards, singling out Rondebosch for the way they embraced the moment.

“We salute the boys of Rondebosch for this extraordinary gesture of sportsmanship. They represented their school with distinction and, together with the men of Gimnasium, showed that there is much more at stake in school sport than merely the final score. On Saturday they proved that respect, caring and human dignity are the greatest victories of all.”
