Xabi Alonso vows to reshape Chelsea squad but stays silent on Welbeck and Henderson links

Xabi Alonso says Chelsea are urgently seeking better balance across their squad but declined to address reports linking the club with moves for experienced pair Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

The new Chelsea head coach was speaking after his reign began with a chaotic 6-4 pre-season win over Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, a match that showcased the team’s attacking firepower but also exposed defensive frailties.

Asked directly about suggestions Chelsea are ready to alter their recruitment strategy by targeting older players such as Welbeck, 35, and Henderson, 36, Alonso refused to be drawn.

“I’m sure that from today until the last day of the transfer window there will be many rumours, and I won’t comment on all of them,” he told Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

However, the 44-year-old did make clear that reinforcements are needed if Chelsea are to be competitive when the Premier League season begins.

“We definitely need the right balance in terms of the quality of the players, the positions, and the overall balance of the team,” he said. “We want to have a complete squad and to build a good team. We have an idea and a plan to achieve that, and we’ll see how we put the pieces of this project together in preparation for the start of the Premier League.”

Experience not the only answer

The 10-goal thriller in Sydney provided an immediate snapshot of the work facing Alonso, as Chelsea combined slick attacking play with lapses at the back.

When asked whether adding more experience to the squad was the key to ironing out those flaws, Alonso insisted that learning and game intelligence are required from every player, regardless of age.

“Everyone has to learn, it doesn’t matter if you are young or very experienced, that’s what happens in the world of football and it’s a quality you always need,” he said.

“You can be fast, or good at dribbling, but you also need game intelligence to make the right decisions. We have to improve quickly in every area because the official competitions start in about a month and we want to be fully ready; managing games properly is extremely important in modern football,” Alonso told BBC.

Busy window as Chelsea move quickly

Alonso’s comments come against the backdrop of an active summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have already secured the signing of forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth £117m, as well as defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. Full-back Marco Balestra has also joined from Atalanta and made his first appearance for the club in the match in Sydney.

The new arrivals form part of the wider rebuild Alonso is trying to oversee, with the Spaniard repeatedly stressing the importance of assembling a “complete squad” capable of coping with the demands of the season.

Praise for Joao Pedro and caution over Lavia

Despite his criticism of Chelsea’s game management and their difficulties in finding solutions to the opposition’s tactics, Alonso highlighted several positives from his first match in charge.

He reserved special praise for substitute forward Joao Pedro, who came off the bench to score a hat-trick in just 10 minutes.

Alonso described the striker as “very hungry to score”, underlining the clinical edge he brought to Chelsea’s attack during a frenetic second half.

The head coach also moved to explain the absence of Romeo Lavia, who did not feature after reporting discomfort in his hamstring.

Alonso stressed that there was “no need to take risks” with the midfielder and indicated that the decision was precautionary, with the focus on ensuring Lavia’s fitness for the start of competitive action.

With only a few weeks remaining before the Premier League kicks off, Alonso’s first outing underlined both the potential and the vulnerabilities of his new team, while his refusal to address the Welbeck and Henderson speculation suggested Chelsea’s transfer business may remain firmly under wraps until deals are close to completion.
