Ter Stegen and De Jong included as Flick names Barcelona squad featuring Abdelkarim for England camp
Barcelona will travel to England on Monday for a pre-season training camp at St George’s Park, with Hansi Flick calling up captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and highly rated Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim in a 31-man squad.
The stay at the England national team’s headquarters runs until 3 August and forms the second phase of preparation for the 2026-27 season, following two intensive weeks of work at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
Ter Stegen is included despite uncertainty over a possible move to Ajax, while De Jong has also been called up even though he is carrying a knee injury. Flick wants both players embedded in his plans as he continues to shape the side ahead of the new campaign.
Hamza Abdelkarim heads a group of academy talents who began pre-season with the first team and will now continue to work under Flick in England. The German coach is expected to delay his first major decisions on who to cut from the group for several more days, in order to assess the younger players more closely.
New signings and staggered arrivals
Karin Adeyemi, whose signing was confirmed last week, is part of the travelling squad. The forward completed his first training session with Barcelona on Friday morning and will now be integrated further during the England camp.
Brazil winger Raphinha is expected to join up with the group on Wednesday, linking with his team-mates partway through the stay at St George’s Park.
Barcelona’s players who went deep into the summer’s global tournament will not be involved in this stage of pre-season. Members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad – Juan Garcia, Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal – have been granted time off until mid-August.
Also resting until around that time are semi-finalists Jules Kounde (France) and Anthony Gordon (England). Their return will come roughly 10 days before competitive fixtures get under way. Other players who featured at the tournament but did not reach the latter stages will report back after completing their allotted holidays.
Friendlies against Birmingham and Preston
Barcelona will play two friendlies while in England. Flick’s side face Birmingham City on Friday before taking on Preston North End, of the English Championship, on Monday 3 August, the final day of the camp, after which the squad will fly back to Barcelona.
Those games come on the back of a strong opening to pre-season, with Barca having completed a fortnight of high-intensity training last week at the Joan Gamper complex. That initial block was capped by a 4-1 friendly win over CE Europa, and the club now view the England camp as a key step in their bid to reclaim domestic and European trophies in 2026-27.
