France captain Kylian Mbappe has joined Swiss sportswear company On, ending a partnership with Nike that began at the start of his career.
On confirmed the move on Friday as it announced its entry into football, with Mbappe becoming the centrepiece of the brand’s plans in the sport.
“Today, Swiss sportswear brand On announces its entry into football alongside football champion Kylian Mbappe, marking the beginning of the brand’s journey into the world’s biggest sport,” the company said in a statement.
On has also appointed 1998 World Cup winner Thierry Henry as its football director and intends to release its first football boots next year.
Mbappe, who has been with Nike since 2006, said he had been attracted by the chance to help create something new.
“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow’s game,” said the Real Madrid forward.
“I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what’s possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football.
“We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”
The financial details of Mbappe’s contract have not been disclosed.
Founded in 2010, On previously concentrated on running and tennis footwear. The Zurich-based company counts tennis great Roger Federer among its shareholders.
Federer also ended his long-standing association with Nike towards the end of his playing career before joining On.
Mbappe’s decision represents a significant loss for Nike, the world’s largest sportswear company. He had become one of the leading figures in its football business and had gradually developed into its main football ambassador.
The 2018 World Cup winner is also the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, with 22 goals. He had taken on a prominent role for Nike after Portuguese great Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 41 and nearing the end of his playing career.
Mbappe’s move follows the departure of Lamine Yamal, a recent World Cup winner with Spain, who switched from Nike to Adidas in 2024.
Nike still has several of football’s biggest names under contract, including Norway striker Erling Haaland and Brazil forward Vinicius Junior.
