Injured Sadio Mané will return for Senegal’s next camp – Patrick Vieira

New Senegal coach Patrick Vieira says captain Sadio Mane has missed his first squad because of a muscle injury, dismissing speculation that the forward has retired from international football.

The former Arsenal midfielder said he had spoken to Mane and expects the 34-year-old to return for Senegal’s next training camp.

“Sadio Mane has a physical problem, which is the reason for his absence, but he will be there for the next gathering,” Vieira told reporters.

Mane had been left out of Vieira’s first squad for this month’s international window, prompting reports that the former Liverpool star had decided to end his international career.

However, the coach insisted the Al-Nassr forward remains part of his plans as he begins a new chapter with the Teranga Lions.

Vieira takes charge of Senegal following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw, whose reign ended after the team’s exit from the 2026 World Cup.

The 50-year-old’s first competitive matches will come in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this month.

Senegal travel to face Mozambique on 25 September before hosting Ethiopia four days later as Vieira begins his bid to guide the 2021 African champions back to continental success.
