Nwabali picks Chippa United return as ‘calculated’ step despite overseas interest

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali chose to rejoin Chippa United after weighing up a concrete offer from Israel, with sources insisting the move is a strategic decision rather than the end of his ambition to play in Europe.

The 30-year-old, who became one of Africa’s most talked-about goalkeepers after his performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is back at the Gqeberha club only months after leaving at the end of his first spell in February.

His return has triggered debate among supporters, some of whom have questioned why the Super Eagles goalkeeper walked away from Chippa United earlier in the year only to sign again with the Chilli Boys.

But people close to the negotiations say the decision followed a detailed assessment of his options, including the financial terms and career prospects attached to an opportunity in Israel.

A source familiar with the talks told the Siya crew that Nwabali carefully compared the packages on the table before committing to a new deal in the Betway Premiership.

“He made a personal decision. There was an opportunity for him in Israel and the interest was real, but after looking at everything, including the financial package and the overall options available, returning to Chippa made the most sense,” the source said.

Overseas dream ‘still alive’

Those around the player are adamant that his decision to stay in South Africa should not be interpreted as a loss of appetite for a move abroad.

“He still has ambitions of playing overseas. Coming back to Chippa doesn’t close that door. If the right opportunity comes along later, it can still happen. This move allows him to keep playing regularly while remaining in the shop window,” the same source added.

Nwabali had remained a free agent after his initial departure from Chippa United, which left him open to approaches from outside South Africa. Clubs in Israel were among those to express interest, while speculation continued to link him with moves away from the Betway Premiership.

However, with no agreement reached on those potential transfers, Nwabali has opted for stability and game time in a familiar environment, with the belief that another window could bring fresh interest from abroad.
