Lamine Yamal’s World Cup-winning season with Spain has propelled the Barcelona forward to the front of the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or and left him on the verge of becoming the youngest winner in the award’s history.

Historic company at World Cup

Yamal’s emergence has been described as a generational phenomenon. In the history of the World Cup, only Brazil legend Pele and Italy defender Giuseppe Bergomi have won the tournament at a younger age, with both playing decisive roles in their nations’ title runs.

Despite arriving at the World Cup with a left hamstring problem that limited his fitness and reduced his minutes, Yamal remained one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking options. His influence grew as the tournament progressed: he scored against Saudi Arabia and won the penalty from which Spain opened the scoring against France in the semi-final.

The current record is held by Ronaldo Nazario, who won the Ballon d’Or in 1997 at the age of 21 years and 92 days. Yamal would surpass the Brazilian if he secures the prize in 2026.

He finished runner-up in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting behind Ousmane Dembele. This time, with a World Cup and La Liga title added to his list of achievements, along with his impressive personal statistics, he is viewed as having a significantly stronger case.

However, one factor that could influence the outcome is how the votes are distributed among members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, given the number of standout performers in the team.

Market value at record high

Yamal’s World Cup success has also been reflected in his market valuation. Data specialists Transfermarkt have updated their figures to make the Barcelona No.10 the joint most valuable player in the world at €220m, level with Norway striker Erling Haaland, who also impressed at the World Cup.

The forward is currently on his summer break after an extended, trophy-laden season, but is expected to return to Barcelona with even greater ambitions as he looks to build on what has already been an extraordinary start to his career.
