Barcelona pre-season starts with dominant 4-1 win as La Masia prospect Hamza Abdelkarim stands out

Barcelona launched their pre-season schedule with a convincing 4-1 friendly victory over Europa at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, in a behind-closed-doors match that showcased a host of academy players and underlined new coach Hansi Flick’s early commitment to youth.

The game, Barcelona’s first since returning to training on 13 July, bore little resemblance to the side expected to start the competitive campaign. Flick named a line-up packed with players from the club’s reserve and youth teams, using the occasion primarily to build fitness, gain match rhythm and assess emerging talent rather than chase a result.

Despite that experimental approach, Barca controlled the contest from the outset and were rarely troubled by their Catalan opponents.

Abdelkarim seizes his chance

La Masia midfielder Hamza Abdelkarim produced one of the standout displays of the afternoon, enhancing his reputation with a particularly eye-catching goal that extended Barcelona’s lead in the first half and underlined his status as one of the most promising faces among the club’s youngsters.

Barcelona opened the scoring after half an hour through Brian Farinas, whose strike in the 30th minute rewarded the hosts’ dominance. Just two minutes later Abdelkarim doubled the advantage with his impressive effort, giving Flick’s side clear control.

Europa responded before the interval, pulling a goal back in the 42nd minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1 at half-time. The setback did little to alter the overall pattern of the match, with Barcelona continuing to dictate possession and territory.

Second-half control seals comfortable win

After the break, Barcelona increased their attacking intensity and translated their superiority into further goals, adding two more in the second half to close out a comprehensive 4-1 success.

The performance in midfield of Guille Fernandez drew particular praise within the camp, with the youngster delivering an assured and influential display in the centre of the pitch. Ebrima Tunkara also impressed, making a strong impact and further strengthening his case for greater involvement over the coming weeks.

Flick rotated extensively as the match progressed, maintaining the emphasis on spreading minutes across his squad and giving several prospects the opportunity to adapt to his demands and tactical ideas.

Ter Stegen features amid loan talks

Marc-Andre ter Stegen played the entire second half, despite negotiations being close to finalising a loan move to Ajax. His involvement underlined the pragmatic approach to squad use at this early stage of pre-season, with physical condition and preparation taking precedence.

In contrast, Adhimi was left out of the matchday squad and took no part in the friendly.

For Flick, appointed to lead Barcelona into the new season, the occasion provided an encouraging first glimpse of his team in match action. With many of the club’s established internationals still absent following summer commitments, the German coach leaned heavily on academy products and reserve players and was rewarded with a convincing display, a comfortable scoreline and several noteworthy individual performances to build on as pre-season progresses.
