Sandro Mazzola: Inter Milan and Italy great dies aged 83

Sandro Mazzola, one of Inter Milan and Italy’s most celebrated players, has died at the age of 83. He spent almost 20 years with the Italian club, which paid tribute to one of the most important figures in its history.

Mazzola won four Italian league titles and two European Cups during his Inter Milan career. He also helped Italy win the European Championship in 1968 and was part of the team that finished runners-up at the 1970 World Cup, two years later.

Inter Milan wrote on its account on the X platform: “There are those who enter history, and there are those who become Inter’s history themselves.”

The club added: “From a young boy supporting the Nerazzurri to an everlasting symbol, Sandro Mazzola crossed generations, achieving victories, creating excitement and carrying his love for these colours.”

Mazzola made 567 appearances for Inter Milan and scored 161 goals between 1960 and 1977. His achievements with the club established him as one of the defining players of its era, while his influence also extended beyond his performances on the pitch.

Inter Milan said: “He shone on the field, and he continues to shine today, that star with the moustache. He often said that he had only one final wish: to be remembered as a good man, always giving everything he had, even when it seemed impossible.”

Mazzola’s international career brought 22 goals in 70 appearances for Italy. His most significant success with the national team came in 1968, when Italy won the European Championship. He later featured in the side that reached the World Cup final in 1970.

Career after playing

After ending his playing career, Mazzola worked as a sporting director at both Inter Milan and Torino. He also became a football commentator, remaining closely connected with the sport and its major events.

Among his notable broadcasting work was his coverage of Italy’s World Cup final victories in 1982 and 2006.

Mazzola was also involved in the creation of the Italian Footballers’ Association, which he helped establish in 1968.

Inter Milan’s tribute reflected the standing Mazzola held at the club, where he was remembered not only for his goals and titles but also as a figure whose association with the team spanned several generations.
