Al Ahly set for historic Barcelona test in Joan Gamper Trophy curtain-raiser

Al Ahly will break new ground in August when they become the first Arab and African club to play in the Joan Gamper Trophy, facing Barcelona on 19 August in the 61st edition of one of European football’s longest-running pre-season tournaments.

Tribute to Barcelona’s founding figure

The Joan Gamper Trophy was first staged in 1966 on the initiative of then Barcelona president Enric Llaudet, who wanted to honour the club’s founder, the Swiss businessman Hans-Max Gamper – universally known as Joan Gamper in Catalonia.

Gamper founded Barcelona in 1899 and laid the foundations for a club that would grow into one of the game’s dominant institutions. Since its launch, the trophy has taken place almost every year and has become a fixed element in Barcelona’s pre-season calendar.

In 2005, a young Lionel Messi seized the spotlight in a 2-1 win over Juventus, a performance widely regarded as one of his first major statements in front of the Camp Nou crowd.

The 2022 edition brought another landmark when Polish striker Robert Lewandowski made his first appearance at Camp Nou in Barcelona colours, helping his new team to a commanding 6-0 victory over Mexican side Pumas.

A year later, in 2023, Barcelona produced one of the most dramatic comebacks the tournament has seen, overturning a 2-1 deficit against Tottenham to win 4-2 by scoring three late goals.

Al Ahly’s landmark invitation

Al Ahly’s upcoming appearance adds a new chapter to that history. Their invitation places them among a select group of non-European clubs to have taken part and marks the first time an African team has featured in the competition.
