Enzo Maresca says Manchester City return ‘feels like coming home’ as Rodri set for surgery

Enzo Maresca has described his appointment as Manchester City head coach as a “return home” and confirmed that midfielder Rodri will undergo surgery on Monday before taking a short break from football.

The Italian, who has signed a three-year contract at Etihad Stadium, was speaking at his official unveiling after being chosen to succeed Pep Guardiola.

“I feel like I’m back home,” Maresca said. “I feel great and from the first day the welcome has been special. I’m very, very happy.”

‘A huge honour’ to follow Guardiola

Maresca, who previously worked on Guardiola’s staff at City for more than one season, insisted he views replacing the Catalan as a privilege rather than a burden.

On stepping into Guardiola’s role he said: “I consider it a huge honour, because the club choosing me for this job is a great privilege.

“It’s a challenge for me, but it’s a beautiful challenge and also a big honour.”

The 44-year-old highlighted City’s long-term planning in the dugout as one of the key factors that attracted him back to the club.

“I think the structure and organisation inside the club is the most important thing,” he explained. “This club has had only three managers in 17 years, which is unusual.”

Rodri to have operation and recovery break

Maresca moved to calm speculation around Rodri, stressing he is relaxed about rumours surrounding one of City’s most influential players.

“When it comes to top players it’s normal there are a lot of rumours around them, so I’m not worried,” he said.

He then revealed that the Spain international is scheduled for surgery early next week.

“He will have an operation on Monday,” Maresca added. “After that he’ll need a holiday to rest and recover, then he will come back to us.”

No further details were given about the nature of the procedure or Rodri’s expected return date.

World Cup returnees and Community Shield plans

Maresca also outlined City’s preparations in the wake of this summer’s World Cup, with several players returning late to pre-season.

“The last group of players will join us three or four days before the Community Shield,” he said. “After that, all the players will be available.”

The Italian did not specify which players are in that final group, but their late arrival means he will have only a short window to work with a full squad before the traditional season curtain-raiser.

Transfer window work still ongoing

Maresca confirmed that City remain active in the transfer market as he looks to shape the squad in his first campaign in charge.

“There are always things that need to be worked on according to what we want, and also because of the nature of the transfer market,” he said.

“Maybe there are still some deals we need to complete, and we are working on that at the moment.”

He did not name any specific targets or positions City intend to strengthen.

Chelsea record and recent departure

Maresca arrives at City after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent at the start of January.

During his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea played 92 matches, winning 55, drawing 16 and losing 21 under the Italian.

His side scored 191 goals and conceded 98 across those games.

Under Maresca, Chelsea won the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup last season, securing two major trophies that helped raise his profile before his Etihad return.
