Liverpool monitoring Vinicius Junior contract situation as Real Madrid star attracts European interest

Liverpool are closely tracking Vinicius Junior’s contract stand-off at Real Madrid as they line up the Brazil forward as a major transfer target for 2027, according to reports in Spain.

The 26-year-old’s current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu runs until the end of the 2026-27 season, a timeline that could open the door to one of the biggest moves of that year’s transfer window.

If Vinicius does not agree an extension with Real Madrid, he will be free under FIFA rules to negotiate and sign a pre-contract with clubs outside Spain from January 2027.

Spanish journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon reports that Liverpool have identified Vinicius as a primary objective for that summer, while Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also understood to be monitoring developments in Madrid.

Premier League options sounded out

The same reports suggest intermediaries representing Vinicius have already made informal contact with several Premier League clubs to assess the feasibility of a move in the event his position at Real Madrid changes.

That interest has been fuelled in part by previous claims in Spain of tension between the player and head coach Xabi Alonso, and suggestions that Vinicius had at one stage been reluctant to commit to a new contract.

However, despite the speculation over his future, Vinicius has repeatedly spoken publicly of his desire to remain in the Spanish capital.

At the end of May, he said: “I enjoy every moment here, I want to keep playing for this club for the rest of my life, but I am not in a hurry to renew my contract, we have an agreement until 2027 and we have a lot to talk about, the club is calm and I am calm.”

Key figure in Real Madrid’s recent dominance

Vinicius has been one of Real Madrid’s most influential players over the past eight years, establishing himself as a central figure in a side that has dominated both domestically and in Europe.

He has won two UEFA Champions League titles with the club and scored in both the 2022 and 2024 finals, as well as lifting three La Liga titles.

On an individual level, the Brazil international has finished as runner-up for the Ballon d’Or and has claimed The Best FIFA Men’s Player award during his time in Madrid.

Since joining Real Madrid, Vinicius has scored 128 goals in 375 appearances in all competitions, figures that underline why some of Europe’s biggest clubs are closely following his contractual situation.

Long-term contract and huge buyout clause

Financially, Vinicius is tied to Real Madrid on a lucrative agreement. The contract he signed in 2022 is worth around €18m per year after tax and contains a release clause set at €1bn.

That buyout figure effectively rules out any club triggering the clause, leaving any future exit dependent on Real Madrid’s willingness to negotiate if the player decides not to extend his deal beyond 2027.

Standout season and World Cup involvement

Vinicius comes off a highly productive campaign for Real Madrid, underlining his status as one of the club’s main attacking threats.

Last season he made 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 14 assists.

On the international stage, he also featured for Brazil at the World Cup this summer, although his tournament ended in disappointment as Brazil were eliminated in the last 16 by Norway.

For now, Real Madrid remain calm publicly about Vinicius’s future, while Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all poised to react if the contract stalemate in Madrid extends into the final 18 months of his deal.
