Radiopane intent on rewarding Orlando Pirates’ faith after injury-hit season

Orlando Pirates striker Boitumelo Radiopane is emerging as a potential breakout star for the coming campaign after repaying the club’s patience with a sharp run of form on their European pre-season tour.

The 23-year-old, who endured a deeply frustrating, injury-ravaged season in which he barely featured and failed to score, was surprisingly retained by the Pirates hierarchy when many expected him to be moved on. That decision now appears increasingly astute as the forward shows signs of rediscovering the prolific touch that once made him a standout at development level.

Radiopane – nicknamed “Radioman” – has returned to full fitness and seized his chance in pre-season, scoring twice in four friendly outings in Spain as the Buccaneers step up preparations for the new campaign.

His most eye-catching contribution came in Marbella, where he struck a spectacular winner against Spanish side UD Las Palmas, underlining both his confidence and his ability to decide matches. Those interventions have offered early evidence that the Sea Robbers’ long-term investment in their youth system could be on the verge of yielding major rewards.

Club insiders had previously raised eyebrows when Pirates opted to keep faith with the forward despite a season in which repeated injury setbacks left him on the fringes of the squad, restricted to brief cameos and unable to find the net. Now, with his rehabilitation complete, Radiopane is positioning himself as a serious contender for a more prominent role.

Intense battle for Pirates’ striking positions

Even with his encouraging pre-season displays, Radiopane is far from guaranteed a place in the starting XI and faces intense competition in Orlando Pirates’ forward line.

He is vying with established striker Evidence Makgopa and fellow attacker Yanela Mbuthuma, both of whom carried much of the goal-scoring burden for the club last term. The arrival of Ghampani Lungu has further increased the battle for the central striking berth, with the newcomer expected to compete strongly for the number nine role.

That crowded attacking department means Radiopane will need to sustain his current form if he is to convert pre-season momentum into regular competitive starts once the campaign begins.
