Al-Ittihad face setback in pursuit of Nigeria midfielder Onyedika

Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad have suffered a setback in their bid to sign Nigeria international Raphael Onyedika after Club Brugge reportedly deemed their opening offer insufficient.

The Belgian champions are understood to have rejected the proposal, leaving Al-Ittihad needing to improve their bid if they are to secure the Super Eagles midfielder during the summer transfer window.

Belgian club stand firm on valuation

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad reported that Club Brugge were not convinced by Al-Ittihad’s initial offer for the 25-year-old, who has emerged as one of the club’s key midfielders since joining in 2022.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that Brugge are seeking around €10 million to sanction Onyedika’s departure, with the Nigerian entering the final year of his contract.

The Saudi club are in the market for a defensive midfielder following the departure of Brazilian international Fabinho at the end of last season, making Onyedika one of their leading targets.

Nigeria star attracting growing interest

Onyedika has established himself as a regular for both Club Brugge and Nigeria, earning a reputation for his defensive strength and versatility.

Although primarily a holding midfielder, he is also capable of operating in central midfield and as a central defender.

Since breaking into the Super Eagles squad, Onyedika has made 26 international appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Other midfield options remain on Al-Ittihad’s shortlist

With negotiations over Onyedika yet to produce an agreement, Al-Ittihad continue to monitor other midfield targets.

The Saudi club have also been linked with Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat, who plays for Fenerbahce, as well as Egyptian midfielder Marwan Attia of Al Ahly, as they seek to strengthen the heart of their midfield ahead of the new season.
