Newcastle agree €41m deal to sign Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba

Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to €41m (£34.5m) to sign highly rated Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, in a move that marks a dramatic late twist in the 20-year-old’s burgeoning career.

The Franco-Guinean defensive midfielder has travelled to England to complete a medical and finalise a five-year contract, according to reports first revealed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Monaco and Newcastle have reached a full agreement on the transfer fee, which includes bonuses and a significant sell-on clause. The Ligue 1 club will retain 15% of any future transfer profit should Bamba be sold on by the Premier League side.

The deal represents a major turnaround for both player and club, with Bamba widely expected only days ago to remain at his boyhood side for a second full season.

Monaco’s plans upended by late Newcastle move

Monaco’s hierarchy had anticipated the possible departure of several senior players this summer, but Bamba – a product of the club’s academy – appeared set to continue his development in the Principality.

The midfielder, born in Blois in central France, sees the move as a major step forward in his career, with the Premier League, European ambitions and the opportunity to work under Howe all key factors in his decision.

Having made 25 competitive appearances for Monaco’s first team, Bamba is now set for the decisive stage of the transfer. He will undergo medical examinations in the coming hours and, if those are successfully completed, will sign a five-year contract at St James’ Park.

Monaco have formally given their approval for the operation to be concluded, removing the final administrative obstacle to the move.
