Lisandro Martinez hits back at Argentina critics after World Cup final heartbreak

Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez has issued an emotional message to fans and a pointed rebuke to the national team’s critics, days after the world champions were denied back-to-back World Cup titles by Spain in the 2026 final.

Martinez, who was forced off injured midway through the final, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram in which he combined regret, pride and a warning to those he believes have revelled in Argentina’s defeat.

“With a heart torn apart with pain because we did not manage to bring back the trophy we all dreamed of, but with indescribable pride in this shirt, in my team-mates, the coaching staff, the directors, the medical staff, the cooks, the kit men, and everyone who helped make this journey as good as possible,” he wrote.

Emotional tribute to fans and call for unity

The Manchester United centre-back reserved his warmest words for Argentina’s supporters, praising their passion and urging that national unity be preserved beyond the disappointment of losing the final.

“And above all, I thank you, because you gave us your love, your support and your strength, that passion that always distinguishes us, and the unity of a people that I hope remains firm over time,” he continued.

Martinez also took time to recognise Spain’s achievement, after La Roja denied Argentina the chance to emulate Brazil’s historic back-to-back World Cup triumphs of 1958 and 1962.

“I would like to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title,” he wrote.

Spain’s victory in the 2026 final secured their second World Cup crown, adding to their 2010 success, and stopped Argentina becoming the first side in more than six decades to defend the trophy successfully.

‘The result does not sum up our journey’

In a clear message aimed at supporters left despondent by the defeat, Martinez stressed that Argentina’s campaign should not be judged solely on the scoreline in the final.

“And to our fans I say: the result does not sum up the road we travelled. We faced many difficulties, we achieved what seemed impossible, and we never once looked for excuses, but always found reasons to keep going,” he said.

In translation he added that Argentina’s players “defended our colours beyond the boundaries of the pitch” and created “unforgettable moments” with the national team, families and fans, insisting that representing the country would “always be a great honour”.

Sharp message to ‘small minds’

Martinez ended his message with his most striking line, interpreted by many as a direct shot at those who celebrated Argentina’s defeat or attacked the team after the final.

“تذكروا دايما ان سقوط العظماء هو مصدر سعادة لاصحاب العقول الصغيرة. شكرا لكم جميعا. حافظوا على بلدنا. احبك يا ارجنتين”.

World champions denied historic defence

Argentina, three-time World Cup winners (1978, 1986, 2022), entered the 2026 tournament in North America as defending champions and one of the favourites, led by an ageing but still decisive Lionel Messi.

They fell just short of becoming the first team since Pele’s Brazil to win consecutive World Cups, undone in the final by what Martinez described as Spain’s “well-deserved” triumph and a La Roja side portrayed by many observers as an almost unstoppable machine.

Local reports say the father of the Argentina captain has since intervened in an attempt to clarify the meaning behind Messi’s words, amid wild rumours about his international future and alleged discontent after the defeat.
