Messi’s quiet World Cup final gesture helps Cape Verde goalkeeper’s family attend showpiece

Lionel Messi personally paid for World Cup final tickets for Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha’s family after being impressed by his performances earlier in the tournament, according to an Argentine journalist.

The Argentina captain is said to have stepped in to cover the costs for several fans who could not afford to attend the 2026 World Cup final, including four members of the veteran goalkeeper’s family.

Spain went on to deny Messi a second successive World Cup crown, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final on Sunday to claim their second world title.

But despite the heartbreak on the pitch, Messi is reported to have left a mark off it with what has been described in Argentina as a “humanitarian” gesture.

Tickets for those who could not afford the final

Journalist Yanina Latorre told Argentine media that Messi made sure a number of people who faced financial barriers were still able to witness the biggest match of the tournament from inside the stadium.

According to Latorre, the 39-year-old captain took the initiative “personally” to secure free tickets for individuals who would otherwise have been priced out of attending the final.

She said Messi instructed his representatives to identify cases of fans who did not have the means to buy tickets for the showpiece and then arrange complimentary seats for them.

The decision was made in the days leading up to the final, as Argentina prepared for a match billed as the culmination of Messi’s extraordinary international career.

Special support for Vozinha’s family

Latorre added that the gesture extended specifically to the family of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who had faced Messi earlier in the tournament.

The initiative “also included 4 members of Vozinha’s family, after Messi instructed his representatives to secure free tickets for them to attend the final,” she said.

Messi and Vozinha met in the round of 32, when Argentina edged past Cape Verde in a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The experienced goalkeeper caught the eye with a series of outstanding saves that came close to knocking the defending champions out of the competition.

His display was widely praised at the time, with observers noting how he repeatedly frustrated Messi and his team-mates before Argentina eventually found a way through.

The reported gesture towards Vozinha’s relatives has been framed in Argentina as a sign of the respect Messi felt for the Cape Verde international after their contest.

During that knockout tie, Argentina had to dig deep to overturn Cape Verde’s resistance, with Vozinha’s interventions almost denying the Albiceleste a place in the last 16.
