AmaZulu monitor teenage goalkeeper Fanele Mngomezulu amid reported Premiership interest

AmaZulu are closely monitoring 19-year-old goalkeeper Fanele Mngomezulu as several South African top-flight clubs reportedly circle for his signature ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.

The Durban side, known as Usuthu, are understood to be assessing the teenager during pre-season, with the player already having featured in at least one friendly as the club weighs up whether to offer him a deal.

Mngomezulu, who previously turned out for Orbit College, has emerged as a sought-after prospect after recent performances that have drawn attention from across the Premiership.

Young goalkeeper on trial at AmaZulu

A source with knowledge of the situation told Soccer Laduma that Mngomezulu has been training with AmaZulu and was given an opportunity to impress in a recent warm-up match against Mvoti FC.

“He is currently at AmaZulu FC and played in a friendly match on Friday against Mvoti FC.

“However, there is nothing concrete yet, as he is still being assessed by the club, so we are waiting for the outcome,” the source told Soccer Laduma.

The club is thought to be using its pre-season programme to run the rule over the shot-stopper as they look to deepen their goalkeeping options before the league campaign kicks off.

Rival Premiership clubs tracking teenager

According to the same source, AmaZulu are not alone in monitoring the youngster’s progress, with other Betway Premiership sides believed to be tracking him after his recent showcase.

“I must tell you, there are other teams interested in him.

“I can’t reveal the names at the moment, but they are Betway Premiership clubs. During the friendly against the ABC Motsepe side, other teams saw him and started showing interest in him.”

The friendly encounter, played against ABC Motsepe League opposition, appears to have served as an informal shop window for Mngomezulu, with scouts from rival clubs reportedly in attendance.

From Orbit College to the Premiership radar

Mngomezulu previously represented Orbit College, a side better known for developing young players than competing for major honours, but his performances there are said to have elevated him into the sights of top-tier teams.
