Morocco back Mohamed Ouahbi to lead Atlas Lions’ 2030 World Cup ambitions

Morocco have reaffirmed their faith in head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, handing him the responsibility of guiding the Atlas Lions towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.

The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) confirmed on Thursday that Ouahbi will continue in his role, although the exact duration of his contract has not been disclosed.

The 49-year-old coach previously revealed that his agreement was set to run until 2030 when he was appointed in March.

Ouahbi succeeded Walid Regragui, the coach who made history by leading Morocco to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and guiding the team to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in January, where they lost but were later declared champions.

The Atlas Lions’ impressive World Cup campaign under Ouahbi came to an end last week after a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-finals of the 2026 tournament. Despite the elimination, the federation believes in his leadership and long-term vision.

In a statement, the FRMF expressed its “confidence in him to continue in his role” as Morocco prepare for future challenges, including the historic 2030 World Cup on home soil.

Ouahbi brings a strong record from youth football, having guided Morocco’s Under-20 national team to victory at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, a success that strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s promising coaches.

The federation’s decision signals its commitment to continuity and long-term planning as Morocco aim to build on their recent rise as one of the leading football nations in Africa and the world.
